EXCERPTS FROM PRESIDENT YAHYA KHAN'S PRESS CONFERENCE (APRIL
10, 1969)
It will be for the representatives of the
people to give the country a workable constitution. I have no doubt that a
constitution worked out in this manner will enjoy the support of the
people and will have the acceptability and sanctity which a constitution must
have.
We, as soldiers, have assumed the responsibility of creating
such an atmosphere. That is the maximum that we can hope to achieve. The
responsibility of reconstructing healthy political life in the country
must be assumed and honourably discharged by the
people themselves. The
community cannot and must not evade this responsibility.
