Only history can trace the growth of this region and be helpful to
understand the evolution of its society which throughout its
existence remained multi-racial, multi-faith and multi-cultural;
yet they pursued almost same modes of production, evolved
same technique to harness nature and set up habitats at the
terminus of two mighty river basins of eastern India. Societies
were somewhat dissimilar, often separated by endless numbers
of rivers, and interests within a society were conflicting. But, on
the whole, they showed common features in their economic
activities and aspirations for life.
During different phases of history, with changes in those divisive
and uniting elements, political changes followed - contributing
towards rise and demise of so many rulers, dynasties and
redrawing of political boundaries.
